International Student Enrolments in Australia Post-Pandemic

Key Results on International Education Year Australia 2022:

  • This data provides information about international student enrolments in Australian educational institutions, comparing numbers from 2021, 2019 (pre-pandemic), and as of April 2023.
  • There was an 8% increase in the number of international students studying in Australian educational institutions compared to 2021, with a total of 619,371 students. However, when compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic), there was a decrease of 18%, equivalent to -137,342 students.
  • Total enrolments in 2022 increased by 4% compared to 2021, with a total of 746,387 enrolments. However, when compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, there was a significant decrease of 22%, equivalent to -205,978 enrolments.
  • Total commencements in 2022 increased significantly by 39% compared to 2021, with a total of 393,066 commencements. However, when compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, there was a decrease of 23%, equivalent to -117,381 commencements.
  • As of 13 March 2023, 89% of student visa holders were in Australia, which is an increase from 74% on 14 March 2022. This suggests that more international students have returned to Australia after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. China experienced a decline in market share from 255,097 in 2018 to 177,471 in 2022, resulting in a percentage change of -31.8% from 2019 (pre-covid) to 2022, and a percentage change of -10.8% from 2021 to 2022.
  2. India saw a decrease in market share from 107,578 in 2018 to 128,979 in 2022, with a percentage change of -9.7% from 2019 to 2022, and a slight increase of 0.3% from 2021 to 2022.
  3. Nepal witnessed an increase in market share from 51,962 in 2018 to 71,806 in 2022, resulting in a percentage change of 4.2% from 2019 to 2022, and a percentage change of 21.0% from 2021 to 2022.
  4. Colombia had a decline in market share from 26,039 in 2018 to 28,437 in 2022, resulting in a percentage change of -10.3% from 2019 to 2022, and a percentage change of 21.3% from 2021 to 2022.
  5. Vietnam experienced a decline in market share from 29,895 in 2018 to 26,434 in 2022, resulting in a percentage change of -16.7% from 2019 to 2022, and a percentage change of 7.2% from 2021 to 2022.
  6. Thailand saw a significant increase in market share from 27,682 in 2018 to 25,792 in 2022, resulting in a percentage change of -0.9% from 2019 to 2022, and a substantial percentage change of 61.2% from 2021 to 2022.

  2. India experienced an increase in market share from 58,818 units in 2018 to 70,231 units in 2022, with a peak of 77,327 units in 2019. However, there was a decline of 9.2% in 2022 compared to the pre-COVID year of 2019. The market share also increased from 17.9% in 2021 to 17.9% in 2022, indicating a growth of 45.6% compared to the pre-COVID year of 2019.
  3. Nepal showed consistent growth in market share from 29,609 units in 2018 to 42,084 units in 2022, reflecting an overall growth of 42.1%. The market share also increased from 10.7% in 2021 to 10.7% in 2022, indicating a substantial growth of 93.8% compared to the pre-COVID year of 2019.
