What is IELTS?

IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) is an internationally known and recognized English language assessment test, this testing system is an evaluator of English language skills for study, migration, and work purposes. IELTS score scale

The Test Format consists of your total band score and individual band scores for the following four sections:

The average score of the four sections is the overall band score, rounded off to the nearest half or whole band. Each section carries equal weightage and scores.

Each IELTS section consists of 40 questions and every correct answer is allotted one mark. These scores out of 40 are changed to the nine-band scale. Scores are recorded in half and whole bands.

What IELTS score do I need?

To be granted acceptance at a university or an English-speaking qualification in an English-speaking foreign destination for a Master's or Bachelor’s degree, a total IELTS score ranging between 6 to 9 is considered acceptable.

Test Format

IELTS Reading test 

Duration: 60 mins 

The IELTS Reading test consists of 40 questions intended to examine the test taker’s English reading skills. You are required to read to gather the key ideas, details, conclusion, writer’s opinion and intent, etc, and other information given in the text. 

IELTS Speaking Test

Duration: 11-14 mins

The IELTS Speaking test evaluates the test taker’s spoken English skills. The speaking test is conducted in three sub-parts.

IELTS Writing test

Duration: 60 minutes

The IELTS writing test requires the taker to complete two writing tasks and includes general interest topics.


IELTS Listening test 

Duration: 30 minutes

The listening test requires listening to four different recordings and subsequently answering the questions asked. The recordings are those of native English speakers. 

IELTS test dates

The computer-delivered test is typically available on all 7 days a week up to 3 times a day. The results are available 2-5 days after the day the test is conducted. Candidates can book their IELTS test at a time and day of their convenience. 

What is TOEFL? 

TOEFL stands for The Test of English as a Foreign Language and like IELTS it is also an internationally recognized English language test for those planning to study in an English-speaking country. The test is conducted in 4 parts –Writing, speaking, reading, and listening. 

The test typically takes roughly 3 hours to complete, and the score is calculated out of 120 by combining all four parts of the test. The higher your TOEFL score, the better your expertise in the English language.

The TOEFL score requirement can depend greatly on the institute you choose to study at, but usually a minimum score of 70  and above is a common requirement across most universities, while some institutions may require scores that are as high as 110. What Is PTE?  

The Pearson Test of English Academic also known as PTE is used for candidates who plan to study abroad for their bachelor’s or masters. PTE is completely computer-delivered and evaluates the candidates in 4 sections i.e speaking, writing, reading, and listening.

The test requires 3 hours to finish, and the candidate is awarded a score out of 90 for their aggregate performance, and a score out of 90 in each section. Higher the score, the better the performance. 
The PTE scores required vary from institution to institution. Many universities require at least 50 as a score, while other institutions will accept lower scores. For more information about the precise score requirements of your institution, check the website of the institute.
